Exhibition in Rostov-on-Don

New York. Premonition

Opening: July 4, 2008

New York is one of the brightest and the most unique cities of modern civilization. This dynamic and many-sided city constantly changes and acquires new traits. Since 1994, Valera & Natasha Cherkashin followed this process and appropriated various aspects of the city in their photographic art. The first series of work dedicated to New York was "Mirages of Empires" which began in the mid 1990's. The Empires works became a valuable part of a larger global project
In 1999, the Cherkashins began work with digital technologies and production in collaboration with the MFA Photography Program and Media Department at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The new series expressed some unexpected premonitions. The iconic use of the compressed square and pyramids found in the series, included a disfigured top, which suggests the ruins of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The horrific event not only became a turning point for the United States. Historically it continues to transform the world.
The new architecturally scaled artwork was installed on an axis that slightly moved, symbolizing the instability of modern civilization. The next year the Cherkashins continued working with the theme of New York as well as engaging new digital technologies. Over the past two years, related works with new dimensions emerged, further expressing the complexity of the dramatic premonitions after September 11th.

The entire New York series was exhibited for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in Rostov on Don in southern Russia in July 2008. In addition, there will be a new video installation titled "America loses its face". New York as part of the larger project, the "Global Underground", will be exhibited in the second gallery of the museum.
